6.1 earthquake off southern New Zealand

An undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck almost 600 kilometers southwest of New Zealand’s South Island on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at 1.43pm local time at a depth of 10 km. No tsunami warning was issued, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

According to New Zealand media, the quake was widely felt, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage.
