Actress Amelia ‘Amy’ charged with selling drugs

TV actress and former Miss Teen Thailand Amelia “Amy” Jacobs and her boyfriend were caught with illicit drugs at a house in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district early on Tuesday.

Ms Amelia, 28, and Punyawat Hirantecha, 40, were apprehended during a police raid on a house at Chaiyapruek housing estate on Sukhaphiban 5 Road around 12.30am on Tuesday, acting Tourist Police Bureau deputy chief Surachet Hakphan told a media briefing.

Police seized 70 grammes of crystal methamphetamine,16 ecstasy pills, a scale and drug use paraphernalia.

The raid followed the recent arrest of a man identified only as Nat at the entrance of Soi Sukhonthasawat 17 in Bangkok’s Lat Phrao district.  Crystal methamphetamine was found in his possession. When questioned by police he alleged he bought the drugs from Mr Punyawat, Pol Maj Gen Surachet said.

According to police, Mr Punyawat and Ms Amelia admitted colluding in the sale of illicit drugs. They allegedly bought 100 grammes of crystal meth from a friend for 40,000 baht, and sold it for 800 baht per gramme. They allegedly admitted being involved in the sale of drugs for about one year.

Ms Amelia said a friend outside the entertainment circle had introduced her to drugs, according to police. She had been using for about a year, to combat stress.

Police initially charged the pair with possession of illicit drugs with intent to sell.

Ms Amelia, who was Miss Teen Thailand 2006, plays the lead role in the popular TV Channel 7 drama “Thida Wanorn (Monkey Daughter)”.
