Heatwave Sparks Surge in Eye Dryness Cases, Experts Warn of UV Damage

Heatwave Intensifies Eye Dryness, Sparking Health Alerts

The prolonged heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40°C and UV indices at dangerous levels, has led to a spike in eye dryness and discomfort cases across Vietnam. Doctors at the Tâm Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City warn that the combination of high temperatures, low humidity, and prolonged sun exposure is accelerating the evaporation of the tear film, the protective layer over the eyes. This has left many patients reporting symptoms like burning, grittiness, and temporary blurred vision, particularly when moving between indoor and outdoor environments.

The situation has prompted urgent public health messaging, with specialists emphasizing the need for immediate protective measures. Patients who work long hours in air-conditioned offices or spend time under fans are especially vulnerable, as these environments further dehydrate the eyes. The dryness is not just a temporary inconvenience—it can lead to chronic conditions like corneal damage if left unaddressed.

UV Exposure and Screen Fatigue Fuel Eye Strain

Medical experts highlight that the eyes’ delicate structures, particularly the retina and lens, are under heightened risk from both UV radiation and prolonged screen use. Dr. Hoàng Quyết Tiến explains that even brief exposure to intense sunlight can cause irreversible damage to the retina, leading to symptoms like dryness, vision loss, and difficulty recovering from light exposure.

Meanwhile, reduced blinking rates while staring at digital screens exacerbate the problem, disrupting the natural tear distribution and accelerating dryness. The dual threat of environmental and digital stressors is compounding the issue. Patients who spend hours indoors with air conditioning or fans report worsening symptoms, as the sudden temperature shifts further destabilize the tear film.

Additionally, dehydration from heat and poor hydration habits—such as relying on diuretic beverages—reduce the body’s ability to produce tears, deepening the cycle of discomfort.

Experts Recommend Preventive Measures to Combat Eye Strain

To mitigate the risks, doctors advise avoiding peak sunlight hours, wearing UV-protective sunglasses, and using wide-brimmed hats when outdoors. They also recommend maintaining indoor humidity levels and avoiding abrupt temperature changes between air-conditioned spaces and the outside. Hydration remains critical, with patients urged to drink plenty of water and consume nutrient-rich foods to support tear production.

Supplements like broccoli extract, which boosts thioredoxin—a protein linked to antioxidant activity—are gaining attention as a preventive tool. However, persistent symptoms such as prolonged dryness, blurred vision, or eye pain require immediate medical attention. The urgency of these recommendations underscores the growing public health concern as heatwaves continue to intensify, threatening both short-term comfort and long-term eye health.

Conclusion

The heatwave’s impact on eye health highlights the need for proactive measures to protect vision during extreme weather. By combining environmental awareness, lifestyle adjustments, and medical guidance, individuals can reduce their risk of irreversible damage. As temperatures rise, the stakes for eye safety grow higher, demanding swift action to safeguard public health.
